MADISON, Ill., July 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The FDA has received a shipment of prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) Viagra tablets containing the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).
About two weeks ago, Pfizer announced that it was selling the tablets for up to $10 for a 30-day supply. In the same announcement, the company said it was seeking approval of the use of sildenafil citrate for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a condition that can be fatal. "These tablets are designed to improve the blood flow to the lungs to help achieve and maintain an erection," said Dr. Albert Bourla, Pfizer's chief medical officer. "While Pfizer's product is designed for men who cannot achieve or maintain an erection satisfactory for sexual activity, they will have an alternative in patients with other serious medical conditions."
Dr. Robert K. Hensley, a spokesman for Pfizer, said, "This information is important in the context of our commitment to our patients and their healthcare professionals."
Pfizer said the company is aware that a supply of the tablets is expected to cost approximately $10, while Pfizer has received offers of discounts through a program designed to help patients save money on prescription medications. However, the FDA did not say how much the drug could be distributed. For example, the FDA recommends that patients with a pre-existing condition such as liver disease be advised not to use Viagra, as it may cause "a severe allergic reaction" and could be fatal.
The FDA said Pfizer will continue to sell the drugs after the manufacturer's release date and will update the product information on a regular basis. Pfizer will update the information at least every six months.
"The FDA is committed to ensuring that our patients have access to safe and effective treatments, including prescription medicines," said Sidney Wolfe, director of the Public Citizen Endorsed by the FDA. "We hope that this information will encourage physicians and patients to act now and to follow the lead of other health care providers who treat patients with ED."
The FDA has not received any reports of serious adverse events related to the use of the drugs. A press release was released on March 27, 2006, which stated that Pfizer is aware that the tablets will cost approximately $10 for a 30-day supply. In addition, the drug will be available to patients at a retail pharmacy in the U. S. in a generic form. There are no restrictions on the sale of the drugs.
The FDA does not recognize that a patient with a preexisting condition may buy sildenafil or another drug for the treatment of the condition. As a result, patients may have a choice between a generic or an over-the-counter version of the drug, depending on their medical condition, risk factors, and preferences.

Product and Commercial AvailabilityLOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A pharmaceutical company is warning customers that it may be selling drugs that are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and that patients should be advised not to use them.
In a letter to U. consumers, Pfizer said that it will "stop distribution of the products and services for a short time, and will provide to consumers a list of all of the products and services available to treat erectile dysfunction. All products are available at a lower price from the pharmacy, or from the manufacturer of the product. All drugs are available for purchase at the pharmacy, and the pharmacy will accept no responsibility for the use of any of the drugs offered."
In a statement, Pfizer said that it is "notifying consumers of the risk of receiving a product containing sildenafil as a result of an error in the manufacturing of the drug."
The FDA, in its letter to consumers, said that the company is aware that the products sold to patients are not approved by the FDA. The products may also contain inactive ingredients, which are deemed not to be dangerous by regulators.
